Abstract

Many papers have been written on participation. particularly on electoral participation,in Mexico. Nevertheless, almost none of these works include social capital as an explanatory variable. With the objective of contributing to this task, and by relying almost entircly on data from the Latín American Public Opinión Project 2010 (LAPOP, 2010), this anide centers on the study of the relationship between the various dimensions of social capital and electoral and non-electoral política) participation in México.
The analysis I submit in this paper supporcs the argument that social capital is a factor that contributes to greater levels of polítical participation, which we generally associate with the process of strengthening democracy. Nonetheless. it is Important to point out that the various dimensions of social capital have different effects on the typcs of participation involved. Results obtained through several statistical models show that the variables that help explain Mexican electoral panicipation cannot be applied to other types of political activities
