La tortura como método de investigación criminal: El impacto de la guerra contra las drogas en México

¿Cómo respondieron las autoridades encargadas de investigar y perseguir los delitos al cambio de políticas de seguridad con el inicio de la guerra contra las organizaciones de narcotráfico en México? Utilizamos la Encuesta a Población en Reclusión del Sistema Penitenciario Federal para demostrar que la tortura durante las detenciones aumenta en forma significativa con el inicio de la guerra contra las drogas en 2007. La autoridad que más cambió su comportamiento como producto de la guerra es el ejército. El ejército, al enfocarse en funciones de seguridad y participar en detenciones de un gran número de sospechosos de estar involucrados con el narcotráfico, recurrió en forma sistemática y generalizada a la tortura, que es comúnmente utilizada en México como un método de investigación criminal.
