Abstract

This paper identifies the ideological positions of Ecuadorean deputies in the lastthree legislatures (1996-1998, 1998-2002 y 2003-2006) and explores the ways in whichthese shape the party system. The data reveal that ideological differences exist and that,by Latin American standards, there is a high level of polarization, both of which have contributedto the governance difficulties in Ecuador. The paper draws upon the lites Parlamentarias en Amrica Latina, project financed by the Instituto Interuniversitario de Iberoamricaat the University of Salamanca.
