Abstract

The relevance of monarchism in Mexican political culture was considerable throughout the 19th Centany. Due to the size of the old Viceroyalty of New Spain, and its decentralization and political traditions, the idea of monarchy in Mexico always appealed to an imperial form of government. This essay is an approach to this imperial imaginary montage in its first stage, that is, in the years following the consummation of the Mexican Independence. In Mexico, Iturbide's empire was not only the first experience of a sovereign government, but also the first evidence of this strong tradition in the 19th Century.
