Abstract

The paper provides a critical assessment of recent attemptsto include group rights in liberal theory. Diversity, it is argued, is acore value of liberalism. However, liberal theorists such as John Lockehad already divised institutional devices to preserve diversity, spe-cially religious diverm'ty: tolerance. The paper argues that we musttum to tolerance to accomodate different cultures in society. Toleran-ce relies on a separation of culture and politics. The implications ofthese ideas are explored in the essay.
